Using Google’s Free Tools in your Home-Based Business
By Mandy Buchanan

Do you use Google in your business? Apart from optimizing your website for the search engines or using Adsense to monetize a content website there are a number of other tools which are beneficial to your business that are offered by Google. Here are a few that you may wish to use:

Google Adsense

Google Adsense is a free monetization method for your website that is easily added and very popular. No matter how you make money on your website you can add a simple piece of code and a new monetization strategy to your website.

Google Reader:

Research and staying up to date is essential to any business. Use the Google reader to collect RSS feeds and stay up to date with information in your business. The Google reader makes it easy for you to read the different RSS feeds you have subscribed to in one place online.

IGoogle:

IGoogle is a page that you can personalize with different tools for your home-based business and by bringing all of these tools together make it easier for you to access them. You can then set this to your start page so that each time you open a browser window you have the tools you need on hand.

Gmail:

Gmail is a great email account that allows more space than you will ever need and so is ideal for home-based business accounts, especially if you are receiving a lot of email newsletters or online orders. You can either access Gmail via Webmail or download it to your computer. The Webmail system though allows for easy searching of your emails and keeps different email threads together.

These are just some of the tools that Google offers the home-based business but it would be a good idea to explore the different Google tools and see what you would like to use and what would benefit you. Take advantage of all that they offer to help start and grow your home-based business.

These are great tools indeed! I particularly like Website Optimiser which allows you to test the effectiveness of changes to your landing pages.

I used to be a big user of Adwords, but it has become progressively more expensive with some large organisations spending a Million or more a year on Adwords campaigns, so it’s not as cost-effective a source of targetted traffic as it used to be.

However, the tools within Adwords give you enormous control over your advertising campaigns.

I find Google to be a two edged sword: some of its tools are very powerful, but I don’t like the level of control G now holds over people doing business online and I consciously try to find ways of reducing my reliance on it..

Cheers,

Martin.
