The power of Kindle.

16 January, 2010 (21:00) | Kindle | By: clive

I’ve been using Kindle for a few months now and must admit that I am very impressed with it. I decided to get one because I often buy computer related books over the internet and find them pretty expensive once they arrive here (south Africa). With Kindle they’re a lot cheaper-no shipping or import duty and what a bonus, the book arrives in a minute!

The only problem I found is that with the 2 java programming books I have bought, the listed program samples are rather small (image size) even after zooming, which makes it a bit difficult to follow. My way around it is to print the program samples from the downloaded files (both books have the code available as a download). It would be nice though if the zoom feature increased the size of the selected text somewhat more.

It’s also very easy to download free ebooks from sites like www.gutenberg.org and then upload them to your Kindle. I also use the Kindle reader on my PC and also on my iPod touch. It’s also possible to syncronise the last page that you read so that all the Kindle readers (the reader itself, the pc reader and the iPod reader) all display the same page on startup. I haven’t bothered with that as I find it easier just to record the location id (it’s displayed at the bottom of the reader screen, like a page number) then use the device’s menu option “go to location…” to go to that location. One can also subscribe to a number of newspapers and magazines and have them downloaded as they are printed. Unfortunately for me none of our South African newspapers are offered, though I have been thinking about subscribing to The Independent or the Time magazine, only problem is that I don’t have the time to read them, what with all the free books I have loaded up on my Kindle waiting to be read.

I just think it’s a fantastic device and can imagine schools and universities issuing them to their students. All notes and other reading material will then be wirelessly downloaded.

Have a look at the Kindle on Amazon’s site and get one for yourself.
